The government of Massachusetts

The system of Massachusetts has been in place for the last 300 years. Beginning in 1841. Howerver, the state government required copies of each and every vital records be forwards to to one of the central state office. Meaning that the government wonts two sets of records exist for almost every birth, Marrige and deaths since 1841.

Prior to 1841, there was only one set of records. The records were maintained by a town or a city clerk. Each and every town clerk recorded varying dergrees of information as there was no state set wide standard. The result is a haphazard collection of vital records that can sometimes be exremely frustating to find read and or copy.
